About the project
The Clean Air Litigation Database is developed within R2CA — The Right to Clean Air, a research project of the University of Turin. The database collects judicial decisions and pending proceedings in which the quality of the air people breathe is at stake — before domestic courts, the Court of Justice of the European Union, the European Court of Human Rights and UN treaty bodies.
Each case is presented through an original abstract drafted and validated by the project's editorial team, together with the essential procedural data and links to reference sources.
Methodology
- Unit of the database. The unit is the case, understood as a single dispute: a case may span several proceedings and instances (first instance, appeal, preliminary references, enforcement), which are listed within the same record. Pending proceedings are included and identified by their status.
- Geography and forum. Each case is assigned to the country where the facts arose; the deciding authority is recorded separately, so that decisions of international courts remain findable both from the country concerned and from the dedicated international-courts entry point. Proceedings before international courts or bodies brought against more than one State are assigned to the first respondent State named. No sub-national breakdown is applied.
- Abstracts. All abstracts are original texts of the editorial team; they summarise, and do not replace, the decisions they describe. The English versions are translations of the editorial team's Italian originals.
- Sources. Each record links to the reference sources used by the editorial team: the official text of the decision where available, established repositories such as the Sabin Center's Climate Change Litigation Databases, and secondary sources.
- Boundaries. The map is a navigation aid only: the depiction of borders and territories implies no position on questions of sovereignty.
